Puss in Boots
Puss in Boots, 'Le Maitre Chat' (the Master Cat), is part of a collection of eight short stories published in 1697 under the title Stories or Tales from the Past, with Morals (Histoires ou contes du temps passé, avec des moralités), with the subtitle Tales of Mother Goose (Contes de ma mère l'oye). Like all our classic fairy tales, the storytelling tradition of Puss in Boots predates its publication. As far as we know, they were first written down by the Frenchman Charles Perrault (1628-1703), The other titles in the set - some also very well known - are Sleeping Beauty, Bluebeard, The Fairies, Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Cowlick Ricky, and Tom Thumb. An interesting note: Charles Perrault published the stories under the name of his son Pierre.
